Triennial FAEIS Evaluation

Faculty Age and Academic Rank

Greetings from the FAEIS team at Virginia Tech. If you are not familiar with this important project from USDA/CSREES, click here to read about FAEIS and why it is important to you.

Triennial FAEIS Evaluation

When you receive an email about our Triennial Evaluation of the Food and Agricultural Education Information System (FAEIS), please complete the survey promptly.

All FAEIS users, including those who complete data entry, faculty, and administrators should have received an email message with a web-link to the evaluation tool. The survey should take you about 15 minutes to complete. Your input is important to us, so we hope you will take the time to share your feedback with us.

Every three years the FAEIS office conducts a comprehensive review of the system in order to remain relevant to your needs. Review results of previous FAEIS evaluations here.

Faculty Age and Academic Rank

We recently reviewed a 1999 FAEIS publication that presented analysis of faculty data for the 1997-1998 academic year. So we decided to compare some of those results to our more current data, specifically the 2006-2007 year. One of the interesting comparisons is related to the percentage of faculty in different age brackets for each of the professorial ranks.

This comparison is based on full-time instructional faculty in the Colleges of Agriculture and the Colleges of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Analysis Highlights:

  • Compared to ’98-’99, more assistant professors in ’06-’07 are in that rank in the 40 and above age brackets (or less are in the 39 and younger age brackets).
  • Compared to ’98-’99, less associate professors in ’06-’07 are at that rank in their 30’s and 40’s but a greater number are at that rank in their 50’s and 60’s.
  • Full professors have shifted from a somewhat equal distribution across the 40-49, 50-54, 55-59 and over 60 brackets in ’98-’99, to a predominance in the 60 and older bracket for the ’06-’07 snapshot. Compared to ’98-’99, less ’06-’07 faculty are at the full professor rank in their 30’s and 40’s.
